Fixed. When nobody had been near Gulux for a while, the server sent him back to where he first appears and then let him walk straight to the point of his route he had been heading for, right under the fortress. Now he just carries on along his route from where he stopped, and if he is ever put somewhere else he rejoins the route at the nearest point. The same goes for every other monster that walks a route.
